How These Medicines Work (in Plain English)

They help you feel full sooner and longer. GLP-1 medicines slow stomach emptying and affect appetite centers in the brain, which can reduce hunger.

Two Options

  • Semaglutide targets the GLP-1 pathway.
  • Tirzepatide targets two pathways (GIP + GLP-1).

Both are once-weekly injections started at a low dose and increased slowly to improve comfort.

We’ll match the option to your health history, goals, and tolerance after your evaluation.

FDA Approvals

Approved for Chronic Weight Management

Wegovy® (semaglutide) and Zepbound® (tirzepatide) for eligible adults when combined with reduced-calorie diet and increased activity.

Ozempic® (semaglutide) and Mounjaro® (tirzepatide); weight loss often occurs but the labeled indication differs.

How Effective are They?

Large, peer-reviewed trials show meaningful average weight reductions alongside lifestyle support:

Semaglutide 2.4 mg (Wegovy)

~15% average loss at ~68 weeks vs ~2–3% with placebo.

Translation: a 240-lb person lost ~36 lbs on average in the study. Results vary.

Tirzepatide (Zepbound)

~15% to ~21% average loss at 72 weeks depending on dose, vs ~3% with placebo.

Translation: a 240-lb person lost ~36–50 lbs on average in the study. Results vary.

We’ll set realistic expectations and pair medication with habits you can stick to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Ozempic® and Mounjaro® weight-loss drugs?

They’re approved for type 2 diabetes. For chronic weight management, the FDA-approved options are Wegovy® (semaglutide) and Zepbound® (tirzepatide) for eligible adults.

How soon could I start?

If you’re eligible and ready, same-day start is often possible after your evaluation.

What are the most common side effects?

The most common effects are stomach-related—nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, and belly discomfort—especially while your dose is increasing. These usually ease as your body adjusts.

Who should not use semaglutide or tirzepatide?

People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) should not use these medicines. Anyone with a severe allergy to the medication or its ingredients should also avoid them. Your clinician will screen for other conditions before prescribing.

Can I take these if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

These medicines are not recommended in pregnancy. If you’re planning to become pregnant, tell your clinician so you can discuss timing. If you’re breastfeeding, ask your clinician what’s appropriate for you.
